Just Tell The Truth Already
We coach people everyday who are worried about what to say, how to say it, and more importantly, afraid what they say isn’t right somehow. It is almost as if they believe there’s some magic formula and if they only knew it, they’d be set. Well, there is a magic formula of sorts. Here it is:
Tell the truth. About all of it. Be disarming, assume intelligence and assume people don’t want pitches, especially from their friends and family. None of us liked to be ‘pitched’ but feels especially creepy if a good friend or family member pitches us.
But there’s a problem isn’t there. Who are the first people we are asked to talk when we are brand new and nervous, family and friends. And, of course, as newbies we are typically most ill-at-ease. Unfortunately, it is also when we are taught some kind of a script that often – well – is a pitch. No wonder so many people never get out the gate. If you’re not new and well past this, put yourself in your new partner’s shoes – you’ll ‘get it’ right away. What’s the answer?
Tell It Like It Is
If you’re nervous, say so. If you’re out of your comfort zone, acknowledge it. Not only will sharing that put you at ease, it will empower you. But there is another huge pay off. It will build a bridge between you and whoever you’re speaking to. Here’s the deal, if you’re talking to someone who knows you, they already know ‘something’s up.’ You don’t sound like yourself. If someone calls you and sounds funny, what do you wonder? What’s Wrong? Is that what you want people thinking when you’re calling to talk about your business? No, of course not. So what do you do?
The Disarming Truth
Tell them you’re nervous but excited. We all resonate with and respond to genuine-ness. We know it when we hear it. We move toward it like a magnet just like we move away from its polar opposite – scripted nervous presentation. Here’s how you might call your neighbor.
Calling a Neighbor
“Hey Bill, this is Amy down the street calling. It’s actually a business call and believe it or not I had to work up to calling you. I’m a bit out of my comfort zone here.” … DEEP BREATH…
What do you think might be Bill’s reaction? ”Nervous? To call me? You’re kidding.”
This is exactly what we mean by the disarming truth. Your neighbor (and everyone else) will want to put YOU at ease. Because you’ve told him how you feel, he’s not wondering what’s wrong and he’s not defensive. He wants to help you feel better. That’s our natural instinct.
Isn’t this is a way easier/softer/more comfortable start than the close-your-eyes-hold-your-nose and dive, — I mean dial.
How Do You Introduce Your Business?
It’s still easy from here, just stay with the truth and be real not scripted.
Listen, here’s the deal. I’ve started a new business. I’m excited because for the first time in a long time I can see a light at the end of the tunnel because of the potential here. I’m looking for some people I enjoy to partner with and I thought of you right away. I’d really like to have you watch a short video and see if this grabs you like it has me. Would you be open to that?
Bill: Sure. What is it?
You say:
Well, honestly, I’m pretty new at this. If I start explaining it we might both regret it (you can laugh or chuckle here – laughing at oneself takes a certain confidence that is easily perceptible and usually well received). The video runs 8 minutes. Would you just take a look – if nothing else as a favor to me and save us both from having me explain it?
Bill gets that you’re nervous, appreciates the humor and says: YES.
Phew
How are you feeling? Relieved. You’ve just accomplished the big scary.
Phew, again…
Will you always use this approach? No, not exactly. Will you always use this technique? Absolutely. Honesty works. Really works. Truth works. It relaxes, empowers, and builds bridges. It opens possibilities that will often give way to probabilities, that will give way to business building success. It is a deal maker, a confidence builder and downright refreshing.
Is This a Pyramid? UGH
What if Bill said something different and replied: Is this network marketing or some pyramid deal? It’s the dreaded question, the big fear.
You’d say: OK, I’m guessing if you asked that question, you either love network marketing or hate it. Which is it?
Bill: Hate it.
You: Why?
As this point Bill could say any number of things, or a combination of things but in the end they all mean the same thing – Bill doesn’t really get network marketing. Here’s what you say.
Bill, it is network marketing. I had the same (or similar) apprehension. This is very streamlined and really cool. If you haven’t looked at network marketing recently you’re going to be surprised. It’s a way for the rest of us to earn great income without working a million hours for 20 years. It’s just smart business. I’ve learned that network marketing is pretty misunderstood, but when you take it apart it makes A LOT of sense. Would you just invest 8 minutes and see if I’m on to something. If you hate it, I’ll leave you alone about it. But you might feel like I do. It could be a real eye-opener, it was for me. Will you check it out?
Bill says, “Yes.”
Goal accomplished. Bill looks. And in this scenario Bill looks because the conversation the two of you had was about what you think and what Bill thinks about network marketing. The dreaded pyramid question turns out to be your friend, not your enemy!
You can’t control what Bill will do after he sees your information. That is out of your control. But your job is to get people to look at your business, not to say, “Yes.” Please read that again. You have no control over what someone says or thinks after they’ve seen your information.
